Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and improving socially significant behavior. It is widely recognized as an effective intervention for individuals with developmental disabilities including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ABA is effective in both improving challenging behaviors as well as in teaching and strengthening adaptive behaviors. ABA is unique in that it focuses specifically on the direct relationship between behavior and the immediate environment. Through careful observation, measurement, and direct assessment, a trained Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) can identify factors directly related to the behavior and then develop appropriate strategies to discourage inappropriate behavior and encourage adaptive behavior.

At Let's Grow! Behavioral Solutions, we believe that evidence-based and ethical services are the bedrock of high-quality, effective care. We are dedicated to keeping current with behavioral research and using industry standards to influence all aspects of our services.
As such, we utilize a function-based approach to managing challenging behaviors. When a child shows a challenging behavior—like tantrums, hitting, refusing, or yelling—it’s easy to think they’re just “being difficult.” But in most cases, the behavior is actually serving a purpose for the child. We call this the function of the behavior.
A function-based approach means we try to understand why the behavior is happening before deciding how to respond. Once we know the “why,” we can teach a healthier, more appropriate way for the child to get what they need.
Most challenging behaviors happen for one of these reasons:
Once we understand the reason behind the behavior, we can develop an appropriate approach to help reduce the behavior. The recommended approach will be individualized based on several factors including the research literature, you and your child's preferences and needs, and what is feasible for you and your family. The approach may include some of the following:
Adjusting the environment or routine to make the challenging behavior less likely.
For example: giving clear expectations, offering choices, or making tasks easier to start.
Helping your child learn a new, appropriate way to get what they need.
Examples:
For example, making sure the old problem behavior no longer works for getting the child’s need met, while the new behavior does work quickly and consistently.
Instead of just reacting to behavior in the moment, we’re solving the root cause.
Kids repeat behaviors that work for them—so when we change what “works,” we change the behavior.
If a child screams to get a snack and it works, the screaming will keep happening.
But if we teach them to ask using words or a gesture—and only give the snack when they use the new skill—screaming loses its purpose and naturally fades.
A function-based approach asks:
This leads to more success, less frustration, and better communication for everyone.
